I've owned a few and purchased them as presents for various relatives. I want a tablet that I can use to read in bed, fit in my crammed carry-on bag, or use to help prepare dinner by propping it up on the toaster. It's the Mini.

From the base model, which costs $349, to the performance beast, the M4 Pro, all of Apple's tablets share the same feature: adaptability. With the correct app or attachment, these large pieces of glass may be transformed into anything.

In contrast, the Mini's 8.3-inch screen makes it more like an iPhone than any previous iPad. It is primarily intended to be a portable gadget that isn't your phone. Your laptop is becoming more and more competitive with the larger iPads, but the Mini still works well with it.

With the exception of several lofty claims that Apple Intelligence will revolutionize everything and that you would undoubtedly require a device that runs it, it is a collection of new and not-so-new components thrown together with no new features or specifications to truly set it apart. 1. The 2024 Apple iPad Mini

Apple Intelligence is not yet a reality. Next week will see the release of something called Apple Intelligence, but that's just the beginning of Apple's massive commitment to completely transform how you use your gadgets.

It may be months or years before the whole product is ready. There aren't many compelling reasons to purchase the new iPad Mini over the previous model until and unless Apple Intelligence advances to a level that is revolutionary.

Naturally, it's a great tablet, just as all iPads have been for years. Purchase this iPad Mini if you're in the market for one! It's your sole authorized option and a decent iPad Mini. However, there aren't many reasons to choose this model over the 2021 or even the previous one. My 2018 Mini is still functioning well for reading and viewing movies.

This iPad Mini is only worth purchasing because it is the iPad Mini. It doesn't have many other advantages. You could either save some cash and get an older or used 2021 Mini, or you could spend an additional $100 and obtain a far superior tablet in the M2 Air. At $499, this Mini may be the least expensive iPad model.

Three things about this Mini are actually new. First, it is compatible with the Apple Pencil Pro, which connects and charges by attaching to the side of the Mini using a magnet. The Mini can perform all of the Pencil Pro functions that other iPads can.

All of the barrel-rolling, squeezing, and hovering functions are flawless, and if you're an artist who carries your Mini around, this alone might make the investment worthwhile. For some perplexing reason, the Mini does not support the Pencil 2, but if you have an older Pencil that plugs into the USB port, that will also work.

The Mini's colors have changed as well. It now comes in a new shade of blue and purple in addition to the standard space gray and pale gold "starlight." I had to double-check that I didn't have a silver model because mine is blue and the color is so subtle. (The silver model does not exist.) It seems awfully pale next to my blue iPhone 16.

The best part is that the cost includes additional storage! That's definitely a victory. It's long overdue that the base edition of the Mini now has 128GB of storage; it's absurd to pay $499 for a tablet with 64GB of storage.

Unfortunately, this new Mini is just a rip-and-replace internal update of the previous model. Even though the official Smart Folio case's kickstand positions the iPad in landscape mode, the Mini's front-facing camera remains stubbornly in portrait mode. In contrast, all previous iPad models have shifted it to the middle of the landscape side of the device. There is still a noticeable "jelly scrolling" impression from the previous model. Additionally, the Mini's power button still employs Touch ID. Tapping my index finger again felt like a major step backward because Face ID is so much faster and better, especially on a device whose power button is rotating in your hands all the time.

The Apple A17 Pro chip, which was used in the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max models from the previous year, is the most significant new specification. Not precisely the same one, though: the Mini's chip has six CPU and five GPU cores, whereas the 15 Pro's chip has six CPU and six GPU cores.

Because of this, some astute individuals have deduced that these chips are "binned," meaning that for whatever reason, they were unable to achieve optimal performance when they were manufactured. (This is an excellent explanation of how it all operates.) Although it's a rather common practice, it does show that you're not receiving the best of the best, or even the best of the previous year.

According to my tests, the Mini performs about 30% quicker than the previous Mini in terms of CPU and GPU performance, which is consistent with Apple's claims. It also performs somewhat worse overall than the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max.

The iPad Pro with M4 outperforms it in every way, and the iPad Air with M2 outperforms the Mini in every way except single-core CPU performance. (Although it doesn't actually matter in daily use, it completely tracks for dull chip design reasons.) In the majority of performance tests, even the 2022-released M1 iPad Air outperforms the Mini.

I am aware of the Mini's limitations when I push it. Even on high settings, it managed to run Call of Duty: Warzone with only the odd frame dropped, but as soon as I turned up the ante in Assassin's Creed Mirage, it began to lag so much that it became difficult to play. Even with medium settings, the game drops frames.

The A17 Pro performed well in Madden NFL Mobile, Real Racing 3, and, of course, any other casual game I tested. You can be confident that this will work perfectly because I doubt that most folks searching for a Mirage machine are considering a Mini anyhow. I read, streamed Community on Peacock, and played a variety of games for nearly 8.5 hours before the battery died. That is about in line with my typical iPad experience.

The new Mini feels one beat quicker than the previous model when used more frequently. iMovie renders a little faster, apps launch a quarter of a second faster, and image modifications feel a little more instantaneous.

The M4 Pro may be another half-beat faster than the M2 Air, which feels another beat faster. For the most part, the M4 is well into the area of diminishing returns, and you would hardly notice the difference between any of them unless you were comparing them side by side. They're all incredibly quick.

Even yet, the Mini's relative lack of power is significant. I have always advised purchasing the most powerful device you can afford and intend to use it for the rest of your life when it comes to iPads (and most other electronics).

And you'll need all the horsepower you can get if you want Apple Intelligence to be truly good and significant. Probably the least powerful gadget capable of running Apple Intelligence is this new Mini. The only iPad sold by Apple that does not enable the capability is the base model, which is unquestionably less powerful than the Mini.
